Storyline vs. Captivate for software simulations

Aug 14, 2013

I'm a long-time Captivate user, primarily developing software sims.  One of my clients is considering Storyline, and they've asked me to provide some info to help them decide.  I know there are countless points of comparison, and a lot of it comes down to personal preference.

I'd like to know how SL handles s/w recordings.  Does it only use FMR? If so, seems like that would make screen edits much more difficult than CP.

How easy is it to make a project accessible for the visually impaired?  Approximately what percentage of project development time should be added to allow for this?  I've never produced an accessible CP project, but it looks like it requires a separate copy of the project and a lot of tweaking.

Does SL allow different output modes from the same recording?  How much effort is needed to produce an interactive simulation from a recording? That's a pet peeve for me in CP.  I've used Oracle UPK, which automatically creates an interactive simulation, but in CP that's a very labour-intensive process.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Maggie =)

Storyline handles software recordings very well! It does not only use FMR (full motion recording)... after you've recorded your process using the Recorder, Storyline will give you an option to Insert either as a Video (single slide, FMR) or step-by-Step slides and additionally it lets you decide between (Try mode, Test mode or View mode). Depending which mode you can choose you can decide if there is mouse movement, click areas, etc. So its pretty flexible in that regard! In terms of accessibility, Storyline is compliant with 508. I'm hoping some other community members may chime in with their personal experiences too! =) Hope this helps for now.

Hi Maggie!

In regards to Software Sim recording, one of the cool SL features that comes with FMR is Action Fine Tuning.  It takes advantage of the video format by allowing you to alter the beginning and end points of a particular slide.  Here's a little more on the process:

I have Artculate now. but also looking at Captivate or Storyline. My content is video heavy; sometimes it is all video for a one hour course. I learned that Articulate loads three slides at a time rather loading the entire video (slides). I would think that it would help with the user's bandwidth. Does Storyline do the same thing? Or, does it improve the Artuculate delivering method regarding user's viewing speed?
