Storyline won't publish to word format

Jan 08, 2014

Hi

I'm having a problem with Storyline in that it won't publish in Word format.  I need this for printing out slide notes.

The error message I get is a popup dialogue which says "The folder 'Folder Name' is read-only, being used by another process or you don not have the proper security permission to access this resource."

There is no issue with folder permissions as I've tried outputting to several different folders including the desktop - any ideas on what's caused this?  I've tried it with numerous Storyline files including those which have worked in the past.

Possible Solution - that worked for me! : )

I just got hit with the same issue while publishing to MS Word, luckily I managed to solve the issue quickly. I hope this works for everybody else too.

The issue in my case was the total character length of the Title and Location. I think this is why the problem appears randomly as some are over this limit while others are not.

Make sure your project name is not too long in the Title and Location field

I was saving to a local folder, still if I make the filename length too long I get the dreaded “The folder “XXXXXX” is read-only, being used by another process…

The problem on corporate networks is that even “local” user folders can have a much longer name than what it may appear on surface, so users having this problem may be reaching the 255 character path/filename limit on Windows.

I don’t know if this is will solve everyone’s issue but hopefully it will help most.

Good Luck,

I appreciate you popping in to share this information Paul. It's something that we advise as well.

Be sure the file paths to your projects and published output are well under the 260-character limit imposed by Microsoft Windows. (Publishing adds characters to the file path you selected. If it exceeds 260 characters, your published output will be incomplete.)

Avoid using special characters, accents, or symbols in your file paths and file names. Learn more about naming conventions in this Microsoft article.

I'm doing two identical courses, but one is in English and one in Spanish. My English version publishes to Word fine, but the Spanish one won't. It acts like it's publishing to Word, displaying the progress (slide 5 of 145, etc.), displays the "Publish Successful" dialog, (attached) but when I click the View Document button, nothing happens. When I click the Open folder icon, it opens a Storyline Output folder that is correctly named (in Spanish) but empty.

The Spanish version will publish to web/html just fine.

I checked the character limits/special characters issues and renamed the course to just "programa" - just one word, no accents or special characters.

I've closed and re-opened Storyline and Word.

Any ideas what the issue could be?

Thanks!

Hello all,

The good folks at Articulate support did some troubleshooting and found the solution to my specific problem of Storyline publishing my storyboard in English but not in Spanish:

I found out that we need to add the Spanish language to Microsoft Word to resolve the issue. Here's how:

1) Open a blank document in Microsoft Word

2) Go to file > option > language.

3) Search for the Spanish language under "Add additional editing languages".

4) Click the add button.

 Publish your Storyline course again.

I had the same issue of not being able to publish a course to Word.

I run Storyline on a Mac using Parallels Desktop as my VM. The issue for me was that my default for opening Word files was the Mac version of Word instead of the Windows.

So in Windows I went to Settings / Apps / Default Apps / Choose default apps by file type. I then scrolled down to .doc and .docx file types and switched to Word 2016.

I hope that helps!
