Storyline3 - can I crop a finished simulation?

Jun 04, 2020

There is a notable empty space around my finished recording.

2 questions:

  1. Can I remove this empty space from my existing finished recording?
  2. How can I, in the future, avoid this empty space in my recording?

Thank you.

Hi Meera,

Good questions — I'm happy to answer those for you!

  1. You can edit screen recording videos if they are inserted on a single slide as a whole video. Here's a great resource on editing screen recordings in Storyline 3 and a quick video of the steps in action.

If you are using a screen recording as an .mp4, you can also use Storyline's video editing tool to crop. Related guides: Exporting Screen Recordings and Editing Videos.
  2. We have these helpful tips for sizing the recording window: Size and Position the Recording Area

If that doesn't help, could you help me with these questions?

    • What Windows Display setting are you using?
      1. Right-click your desktop and select Display settings.
      2. Click the Display tab in the upper left corner of the window that appears.
      3. Under Scale and layout, select 100% from the drop-down list.
    • Are you using dual monitors?

Hi Katie.

  1. I'm working with Record screen and not videos.
  2. Windows display = 1920 X 1080 (Recommended)
  3. Scale and layout I've used = 100% , although 125% is the Recommended settings and I've used that too but getting same problem.
  4. I am using dual monitors but have tried disabling the 2nd monitor (pulled out HDMI cable) but still getting the same problem

I've tried different display settings and different scales and layout and even switched off the dual monitors, using only 1 monitor and although my Previews fit well on the screen, it's when I publish my project that the result does not fit Chrome or IE. I'm having to use my scroll bars to move along the screen to see the content. The software that I'm emulating is static, there is no need to scroll to see the whole page. I've limited the player to only showing the title of the project, no Menu but having the same problem.

Hi Meera,

Thank you for sharing those details!

That is strange that extra spacing is still being added even after adjusting your screen and resolution to 100%. If you haven't tried this already, it might be worth running a repair of Storyline 3 to see if that resolves the issue.

If you find that the screen recordings are not working as expected after running the repair, I would like our Support Engineers to help take a closer look. You can use this link to connect with them here
