Submit Name to Change Variable and Move to Next Slide on Enter Press

Mar 13, 2016

Good day,

I've got a interaction where the user selects their avatar, and on the next slide needs to enter a name for there avatar (to affect variable %CharName% throughout the rest of the story).

I'd prefer the user be able to type in a value and press enter to set the value, rather than this occurring when the user loses focus. Currently, I've only gotten this to work when the user types their name, loses focus, and clicks the next button.

I want it to set the variable CharName to their typed value and jump to the next slide when they press enter.

Can someone please share with me how to accomplish this?

Thanks.

Hi, Mat -- Thanks for reaching out! It's always a good idea to attach your .story file, or if privacy is an issue, a pared-down sample so that people in the community can take a closer look and make suggestions. Please use the ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom left corner of the reply box in the thread, and you can browse for the file from there. :)

Hmmm. Thanks for the quick responses. I can't submit an example from my current location, but will look into it when I get back to the studio and can "reduce" the otherwise lengthy course into a couple of slides.

I did set the slide to jump to the next slide when user presses enter, but the variable wasn't capturing the user's text entered. I'm thinking maybe the way I set up the text entry box may be my problem? I'm sure an upload will help us identify the root cause of my issue.

When time allows I'll submit the slides and look forward to some more help. I really love the user community and look forward to posting some "excerpts" from this learning. It's Star Wars based, and utilizes a lot of variables and animations. Quite possibly my favorite Articulate project yet :) Not that all my projects built with Articulate aren't my favorite...

Thanks so much!

Christie/Leslie,

I was on my lunch working up a "pared down" version of my eLearning to share, and I was able to solve the problem (thanks to your earlier insights). Leslie, your screenshot was the secret, I had object: slide (x) and needed to change the object to Text Entry! Duh...

Anyways, I can't say enough how much I appreciate your help. Give me two weeks, and I'll come back here to post a demo and (also) I plan to post in the Star Wars Inspired E-Heroes Challenge area. I'm just now entering the the "have-testers-evaluate-my-work" phase to give me some feedback. After I make their changes, the Heroes will hear about it.

That being said, I'm so glad I won't have to hear, I wish I could just press enter rather than submit when I enter my name! Because now, you can enter your name, press enter, and voila!

Cheers.
