I have a PDF exported to individual PNG files one per page. I have a new scene with the same number of layers as pages and I have made navigation back and forth and close button for the PDF. On each layer I have a scrollable pane into which I put a page. I can reuse the PDF across courses. I works very well and I cant see a downside except for time if I have a long PDF.
Does anyone know of a way to have a single layer and then swap out the image in the pane as the navigation buttons are used?
I have looked around but cant find anything. If not I may try some javascript.
I'm not sure I'm clear on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're looking to change the image within a Storyline slide based on the user navigating between elements have you looked at using the state of an object? So change it from a hidden to a normal state based on the user clicking on X?

And I also wanted to note, if you were considering using JavaScript, that is not something for which we'd be able to provide support but I'm sure one of the JS-savvy gurus in the community would be able to assist you further.
