swf file interactivity not working after publishing to cd

Jan 17, 2013

I have created a very basic game in Flash and inserted the swf file into Storyline.  When previewing the game it works perfectly (the shapes move across the screen and the skateboarder is movable using the arrow keys).

However, when I publish the file to cd, I lose the ability to move the skateboarder with the arrow keys.  I can tell the game is working otherwise because the shapes move across the screen and my local database is updated with the score at the conclusion of the game.

When I publish to "web" or Articulate online, the file works perfectly.

Attached is the .story file with the game.

Does anyone have idea of why I lose the interactivity?

Hey Rhonda, welcome to Heroes!

Thanks for sharing your file with us, and I got the same results as you. I'm aware of some issues that exist in Presenter when using arrow keys when published for CD, and I'm wondering if those same issues might apply to Storyline. Would you mind opening a ticket and sending your file to our support engineers so they can take a look at this? Thanks!

Hi Rhonda.

I took a look at your file and it appears the issue has to do with viewing the content by launching it with the EXE file. If you open your published output and double click the story.html file it works fine.

Are you planning on distributing this via CD? I don't really think there is much that you can do about that. Could you assign the jump action to a different key to see if that makes a difference? Outside of that, it looks like hosting the content online or launching it locally via the HTML file would be your two solutions that I can see.

It is true that when hosted online (either to my internal IIS server or Articulate Online), it works perfectly.  Unfortunately, what happens is that the database is not updated.  I figured it was easier to troubleshoot the movement of the skateboarder than the database, but that may not be the case.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Saied,

If you need to publish for CD, you'll want to look at converting the Flash file to another supported format for HTML5. If you don't need to publish to CD, you can publish for Web, LMS, etc. and use the Flash first, HTML5 fallback. That way users who access your course on a Flash supported browser will be able to view the video.

I'd keep in mind that more and more browsers are removing support for Flash, so it may be a better course of action to look at converting the Flash file to something else.
