Syncing Mouse Movement With Action-Fine-Tuning

Nov 06, 2015

I've done a step-by-step, View Mode recording of a software program and at one point, a mouse click is not showing up.

  1. A button is clicked that posts a dialog box.
  2. A check-box is clicked to select something.
  3. Next button is clicked to advance to a new option in the dialog box.
  4. Default option is left alone and a Finish button is clicked to close that dialog box.

The problem I have is that step-2 was not captured. The recording jumps right to the dialog with the option already selected and the mouse moves from the previous slide's mouse position to the Next button (i.e. the mouse doesn't even move from the check-box down to the Next button).

I had never tried using Action-Fine-Tuning but looked at the Storyline doc and started adjusting the screen recording with this feature. As I adjusted the "action" I could see the mouse movement in the Action-Fine-Tuning dialog and adjusted the screen recording to include the one or two seconds of missing recording time. However, the mouse still starts from outside of the posted dialog (from it's ending position in the prev. slide) and moves down to that Next button click, skipping the check-box selection. Storyline also won't let me move around the mouse position and if it did, it would require multiple positioning points to accommodate the check-box click and the Next button click.

It's 12 noon Pac. time on a Friday and I'm on a deadline to get a draft out today. This is really binding me up because it skips a small but important step in my recording!

Help!

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I am lucky because the dev environment was still up and I just re-recorded that 2nd and 3rd step and inserted those slides into my project. I said I was lucky because this dev environment was set up as a temporary environment for my training dev and I didn't expect it to still be up. Had it not been, I would have had to publish my project with that annoying anomaly.

I'm already behind my deadline and since my project's been updated with the additional capture slides, I'm moving on. If I have time next week, I may post the project file. However, I think the issue is the disconnect between the mouse recording and the screen/action recording (i.e. them being two separate entities). I know that's a design element that allows for flexibility between the two (e.g. "hiding" the mouse cursor on occasion) but that flexibility should allow a lot more than just moving the path of the mouse or making it visible/invisible. It should be possible to adjust its path, just as with an Animation path.

Thanks again for the prompt response.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the update and I'm glad a re-recording allowed it to work as you wanted. If you'd like to see other behavior we'd welcome your ideas or descriptions of situations where it didn't work for you! You are welcome to share those here but it's also a great idea to send them along in the form of a feature request as those go directly to our product development team.

Hope a weekend of work is not in your future if you're behind! We'll be here next week if you need anything else. ;-)
