Syncing with Video

Dec 07, 2015

Hi All.  Could someone with video experience see if you can offer advice. It seems when I try to add text boxes and sync with a video it never matches up. I have the raw video running on another screen to benchmark cue pints and if I go to the same timeline of the video I have dropped into storyline they don't match up. I'm off a few seconds everywhere and it's driving me nuts. It seems when I hit a cue point and then play in in review slide--the graphics don't come up where I put them. I have also noticed that if I use the seekbar to move to a spot in review, the video won't catch up and I can't proof anyway.  Any advice?

Thanks for getting back Ashley. I have never had any issues with this with
audio files-it just seems to be off with video files. When I hit a cue
point to add a graphic over a video, when I watch it in preview-they don't
always line up where I set them. Are videos different than audios. I also
noticed that if you click along the seek bar in preview to get to a point in
the video-it doesn't buffer correctly and all animations get out of sync.
Just frustrating-seems like I have to tweak a bunch of times for each one.
Thanks.

Yes-that's when I realize there is a buffering issue. I line them up with
cue points but they are off a little in preview and I have to go in a guest
and keep adjusting. For sure tell the tech team that when you use the
seekbar to move along in the video to a point-it definitely doesn't buffer,
I have to watch in preview without touching the seek bar or it comes out all
jumbles-just frustrating when you have a 3 minute video and your issue is at
2:30 and you have to watch it all to get to it. Thanks.

Thanks Ashley. I have one more quick question. I just downloaded the .10
version and when I went to do a trigger for a layer-I can't find it any
more. There used to be a choice where you could show a layer when the
timeline reaches a certain time or cue point. I can find that choice it
only shows timeline starts and ends. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Hi Jeff -

Do you mean Storyline 1 vs. Storyline 2? Articulate Storyline 2 lets you trigger an action when the timeline reaches a specific cue point, but that was new functionality for Storyline 2. In Storyline 1, you could set it to show a layer when the timeline starts on a particular object and just move that object off the slide stage, and set it's timeline to begin at the cue point you'd like to reference.

Hey Ashley—I seem to keep having trouble with video syncing. Attached are two screen shots. The top one is on my computer and what the screen looks like in preview, The bottom one is the published version—the text is all out of whack on the exact same slide. What can be happening during publishing that could change it? It also seems like when you have the seek bar available with a video, everything doesn’t seem to sync properly if you jump around on the seek bar Do you have any advice? Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

It looks like you may have replied via email, and as such attachments aren't included in the forums. You can visit this page to reupload them here so that we can take a look.

In the meantime, I do know that if you enable the seekbar as a part of the video controls, it is no longer associated with the slide timeline and therefore if the user seeks within the video it could cause it to no longer match up with slide elements.

I also know our Quality Assurance team is currently investigating an issue with the timeline getting out of sync when other elements are added in addition to the video (such as audio or text boxes). It sounds like that may be what you've run into and are describing? If so, I'll include this thread in the reported filed with our team so that we can share any updates with you here once they're available. I cannot offer a timeframe in regards to when I'll hear back from them so in the meantime the current workaround is to disable the seekbar on impacted slides or set it to "read only" from the player menu.

Ah, sorry Jeff - I meant revisit this forum page/thread vs. responding via email.  Once you're on this page you'll see an option for "Add attachment" at the bottom of the reply and you can use that to include here. Also you're always welcome to send along project files to our Support engineers here: http://www.articulate.com/support/contact/submit.php so you may want to bookmark that page as well.

Hi all,

I wanted to provide an update here, as Storyline 2 Update 8 was just released, and included a number of fixes which you can see in the release notes available here. The item you all may be particularly interested in is how it fixed an issue where a video would no longer be synced with the slide's timeline after using the seekbar to scrub back and forth through the video. You can download the latest update here, and after downloading and installing the latest update you’ll want to republish any existing content to ensure that the updates and fixes are applied.

Let us know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.
