Tailored questions using variable references

I am trying to make a series of questions that ask the learner to pick three topics.  Then, the next three slides ask the learner to talk about each of the topics they mentioned in the first slide.  I have two issues.

1. If I put the reference in the question, the topics they entered shows up fine on the essay slide, but the learner will have %reference1% in their results question instead of what their topic.  

2. If I put the reference in the essay entry box in place of the default text says "type you answer here", then it reads "I chose the topic of  %reference1% because..."

Is there any way to fix just one of these problems?

You cannot use variables as part of the Slide Title nor in the questions. In the case of the latter, the slide will read your variable and display it but the report.html won't. It will only look for
text: question.strDescription.

Suggestion: Use a custom slide to display all your variables and use js window.print(); to have them print it.
