Tech Terms
Apr 24, 2014
Is there an industry standard for tech terms, to use when creating software simulation training?
I would like to standardize my terms and have something to back up my choices.
For example;
“Click the Exit button”
One customer accepts this, one says it should say left click, and one says “click” is a noise not an action (noun- depression of a button on a computer mouse)
I was looking for something would include actions a user would perform like;
Click – Click the button
Highlight / select? – highlight/select the second choice
Right click
Left click
Drag and Drop vs Drag
Excreta…
And nouns that described what they were looking at like;
Dropdown menu
Pop-up menu vs Pop-up window
Excreta…
Is there something out there (that is simple)
Thank you for your time J

What you are describing sounds like a style guide. I generally refer to the Apple Style Guide for technical usage. It's quite comprehensive and well indexed. Other companies also have these guides, e.g., Microsoft etc. but I've stuck with Apple's version.
