Testing text input? Testing multi-input account setup?

Jun 12, 2014

For software application training, I have a scenario to train that includes opening a text box and then creating text in that box. I know I can set up a hot spot to test the basic selection of the text box, but it's the typing task that's puzzling me. My SME suggested providing a simple, short text string to be typed, so first question:

1. Can I test for accurate typing of that particular string? If so, how? (I realize this question might be posted and answered in the other forum, but please read on.)

Instructionally speaking, the SME's idea would actually test only the ability to reproduce that particular string of text, mechanistically. It seems to me that allowing the users to type free-form text, especially if it's using their local terminology, is truly testing their comprehension of the use of that particular text box, and thus it's better training.

2. Even if it's gibberish (asdflkj), can I test for *any* text in the text box? If so, how?

3. We will never see and don't care about the users' localized responses, so this wouldn't work with Quizmaker, I don't think. Or would it?

In a perfect world, I'd provide a data set that the user could print out, and then they would type/select from lists/click buttons to enter that data, like creating a new customer account.

4. Has anyone created training in which users work from a downloadable, printable list of raw data to set up a record in a software application? If so, how did you test?

Any other instructional design ideas? Best answer gets a free cuppa in Austin, Texas.
