Text Autofit Improvements: Turn Off?

Jun 07, 2021

Hi all!

Does anyone know how to turn off the new Text Autofit Improvements that came with the most recent update? I have a project with hundreds of slides that now have the grey bar and I'm on a deadline.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi Allan,

Thanks for reaching out! To help clarify, any new projects started in Update 52 will automatically use the Text AutoFit Improvements feature.

If you open an older project in Update 52, you will have to manually upgrade the text to use this feature. Once you make the switch, you can't turn it off, nor will you be able to revert to a previous version as your file now contains the new Autofit feature.

If your file was created in an older version, can you take advantage of the backup that was created when you made the upgrade?

Well in the next update can you make it optional so that it can be turned off.  It's a very annoying feature that, in my opinion, was unnecessary.  There was nothing wrong with the previous ability to auto-fit the text.  Now I am wasting a lot of time fixing text boxes that should not have to be fixed.  The fact that it even adds the grey scroll bar for text in buttons is just plain stupid.  This may be one of the dumbest updates you guys have ever done.

This is a terrible upgraded causing us HOURS of work to fix. It should 100% have an option to turn it off.  My slides were perfect and now I have to go through every single slide to try and get rid of the thousands of scroll bars. This was NOT a benefit!!!

Hi Everyone,

I replied in this discussion here but wanted to relay that we appreciate you taking the time to express the troubles you've experienced, and we're looking into them. Here's a recap of what we've seen so far:

When a project is upgraded to use text autofit enhancements, unexpected scroll bars sometimes appear. These scrollbars are due to text areas having extra lines, text, or other elements that overflow the bounds or margins of the shape.

These tips will help avoid these issues:

  • Remove blank lines at the end of the text box: Check that the end of your text is indeed the end; otherwise, Storyline will assume that an extra line needs to be read, and a scroll bar will appear.
  • Remove extra margin space in the text within shapes: Extra margin space can cause text to overflow the bounds of the shape. Remove that extra margin space by right-clicking on the shape and formatting the Text Box to remove unnecessary margins.

If there are any other troubled spots we can review, please let us know. You can connect with our Support Team here.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to follow up and relay some updates regarding the Text Autofit feature.

Our Product Manager, Simon, shared in the discussion below some actions we're taking to help alleviate the pain points you're experiencing. Over the coming weeks, we’ll release an update that temporarily disables the default autofit feature while we make more improvements.

Update on Recent Text Autofit Enhancements in Storyline 360

We appreciate the time you all have taken to share your concerns, and we'll let you know when there's more news to share.

Hi everyone,

We just released another update for Articulate 360, and thanks to your feedback, Text Autofit Improvements are no longer enabled by default.

This means, starting with this update, all new and existing projects that haven’t upgraded project text will remain with the legacy settings. If you have a project with text autofit enabled, you can update Storyline 360, then import the slides into a new project as they will not have the text autofit settings enabled.

Then, when you're ready, you can upgrade project text at any time to make the text more accessible to all learners. You can read more about this and all the new features and fixes below!

Hi Ren

Thanks for your updates.

I am working on SL360 (I started my project from scratch in SL360) and I have a colleague using SL3 that needs to work on my file, but she cannot open it due to text autofit improvements. However, I am not using any autofit and I haven't upgraded any text. See attached the setup I have for all my text boxes.

Can you please advise on what I should do in order to make it possible for my colleague to open my file in SL3? It is a bit urgent. Is there a feature I can disable at once?

Thanks a lot!

Amaia

Same problem here.

Trying to import the slides into a new storyline 360 file (works fine) and then importing into Storyline 3 does not work. Get error in storyline 3 saying that files are not compatible because of autofit feature.

Do you need to manually turn off auto fit on every text box in the project, before importing into a new empty project? (we have done this, but I guess there is a chance one was missed)

Thanks

Hi Ren, we recently switched to Storyline 3  from Storyline 360.  When I attempted to open my project in SL 3 ( that I saved in SL 360), I get this message,  "Text Autofit Improvements".          To remedy this, I went back to SL 360, open my project, and clicked and selected "Do Not Autofit"  in Text Box property ( by selecting the text box, right clicking on "format shape", left clicking on "text Box", and clicking and selecting the circle that that reads "Do not autofit" .  Question: Is this the correct way to make the SL 360 project openable in SL 3?   If not, what can I do in SL 360 that will allow me to open the file in 3? Some of my team members may still have access to SL 360.  If you can please advice what is the best way to save my 360 project so that it is compatible to SL 3?

Hi, Mofidul.

Thank you for reaching out!

Take a look at the article below for the compatibility between Storyline 3 and Storyline 360:

As Ren mentioned above, starting with update 54 (July 2021), all new and existing projects that haven't upgraded project text will remain with the legacy settings. What this means is that if you create a new file and you don't choose to upgrade the text, you should be able to open it in Storyline 3.

Let me know if this answers your question.

Hi All,

I had this same issue (autofit feature being applied in 360, rendering my file Storyline 3-incompatible) and was helped by Darwin at Articulate. He provided some instructions and a walkthrough video. This worked for me. Thought I would post here in case anyone else is experiencing this and needs help:

Here are the steps in the workaround:

1. Create a copy of the .story file.
2. Rename the duplicate file to .zip.
3. Extract the file to a folder.
4. In that folder, click docProps and then open featureManifest.xml in a text editor, such as Notepad++.
5. Remove the following line below:

<TextScrolling3 description-2052="?????????" description-1033="Text Autofit Improvements" description-1036="Améliorations de l'ajustement automatique du texte" description-1031="Verbesserte automatische Textfeldanpassung" description-10="Mejoras de ajuste automático de texto" />

6. Once you save your changes, select all the contents in the folder and extract them to a new compressed (zipped) folder.
7. Rename the new zip file to .story and open it in an earlier version of Storyline 360.

Here’s a video demonstration for reference:

I hope this helps.
