Text box size and font size constantly changing
Nov 14, 2013
A similar question in the forum got a response about viewing the slide at 100% size to keep both text boxes and fonts from changing. I've tried this and the text boxes and font sizes still keep changing. Sometimes the vertical scroll bar appears in text boxes even though there is no additional text to scroll to and there are enough blank lines after the last text line. It's really frustrating and such a waste of valuabe development time to have to keep fixing text boxes and font sizes!!! Has anyone had luck with avoiding this issue? Please, share how. Thanks.

Hi Effeda,
Shot in the dark here but is your computer set up for 96DPI? If not, this causes a lot of weird issues with SL. Here's an Articulate Storyline DPI support page with info on how to check it/change it.
Please shout out with any follow up questions.
Hi Efleda! Looks like Becky is assisting you here, just let us know if this suggestion helps and if you need anything further.
Thanks, Rebecca. I followed the link you provided and found that my Windows 7 system is already set at the appropriate settings--96 dpi with 100% scaling. But even with the recommended display settings, I'm still experiencing these issues.
Hi Effeda,
Oh, well, It was a shot in the dark. I'm not experiencing that problem. Working at 100% solves any issues for me, so I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions.
Perhaps you can upload a portion of your story for the community to look at. Or it may be that Articulate or other community members have other recommendations for you.
Good luck.
Hi Efleda! While you are gathering that file to share, another thought: please make sure that you are working on your local drive.
Hi Efleda,
I hope you worked this out by now. I was having similar issues for a while and wanted to let everyone know how I solved the problem.
The first response from Rebecca is what helped me. When I navigated to my Display settings in Control Panel ( Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display ) in Windows 7, it was set to enlarge my text by 125%. So in Storyline when I had a text box with text in it at any given font, when deselecting the text box it would enlarge by 25%. This was extremely frustrating when opening a file to make some revisions and all of my text was resized.
So I changed the setting in the Control panel to "Smaller - 100%" and it has solved the issue.
Hi Serge,
Thanks for sharing your solution here, and as a reminder Storyline will function as expected with a DPI set to 96.
Also, welcome to the Heroes community!
Is this going to be fixed? Working at "96 dpi" causes me major eyestrain. This is an accessibility issue.
Hi David,
You may find that user interface elements in Articulate Storyline are small and difficult to read on high resolution monitors—generally, monitors that display more than 2,000 pixels in width.
We're working to improve performance on HD monitors. In the meantime, you may need to reduce your screen resolution while working in Storyline.
Hi Ashley,
I'm actually only running at 1080p resolution. I just don't have great vision and need to use font scaling - which clearly other people need as well. Although setting the scaling to 100% does fix the buggy Storyline text boxes, it's not a practical workaround for me long-term given my vision. I'm not sure my request is the same as the 4K monitor fix, since I'm really just concerned with having Storyline respect font/desktop scaling. Can you confirm if there a bug submitted already for this issue?
Hi David,
Thanks for sharing a bit more information about what you're running into. I'm not sure I'm clear though on what you're seeing in regards to the font/desktop scaling? The issues in this thread were due to using the different DPI setting - so it sounds like you're seeing something else regardless of DPI?
Perhaps you could share some screenshots with us here so that it's easier to identify the issue and if it's something we're already aware of or need to investigate further.
Also just an FYI that responding via email includes your signature here so you're welcome to edit the post to remove that information if you wish. You can visit the thread and find the "Edit" button at the bottom of your most recent post.
Oops, my mail server added that content automatically!
I'm referring to the same thing as you; sorry for using confusing language (see screenshot for where to make this adjustment). I'm wondering if there's a bug request to fix Storyline so that it respects the WIndows DPI setting?
Hi David,
I don't think it's that Storyline isn't respecting that DPI setting - just that when you're on a high resolution monitor it can appear that things are very small. That is something we've shared with our team, but currently it's considered a feature request. You mentioned text boxes, so if you're struggling with something in regards to how those look, could you share a screenshot of that?
I am experiencing similar problems...one word would be in a line when I am editing the text box and then jump to the other line when I close the box. I am using Windows 10, and can't find a way to set it t 96 dpi. The article only gives instructions up to Windows 8.1.
Hi Marcos,
Windows 10 is not supported for Storyline 1, and that's why DPI settings are not included in that article. You can find the steps in this article for Storyline 2 which does support Windows 10.
