Text builds not working in Storyline

May 28, 2013

Having brought PowerPoint 2010/2011 files into Storyline, I find that my PowerPoint text builds are all messed up. Some appear in the wrong sequence, one line of a two-line bullet point appears or random lines of text appear before they should. There doesn't seem to be any way of correcting this in Storyline.

The slides were saved from a Mac.

The original files were too big to attach but I've attached a selection of slides from the PPT file.

Is there a solution?

Thanks.

Hi Sean,

It all looks OK to me, (albeit I am on a train with a dodgy network connection...).

It is all (?) based on the Fade animation - which is supported in Storyline.

You just need to go to the Timeline, and synch up all the timing of all the parts, depending on whether the text is in individual Text Boxes, OR using the "Fade by 1st Level Paragraph" setting, expand the text box to show all of the individual bullet points, then drag to the appropriate Timeline position.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Bruce. Not sure if you brought the presentation into Storyline and compared how it plays there.

All the builds use the Fade animation. I would have expected the text builds and animations to work exactly the same in Storyline as they were in PowerPoint. As I said, they just appear randomly.

As regards syncing, yes, I could go in and line each one up individually but that's an awful lot of work. The project I'm involved with will have many PPT presentations, so that level of editing is not feasible. We need to be able to import PPT slides and not have to to anything (or at least as little as possible) with them. Is that possible with Storyline or is the program more limited.

I've attached a sample Storyline file here with the sound removed to make it smaller.

In fact, the more I think about it,  it's a big shortcoming, since we would like to use Storyline for a major university online learning project. We may end up having to look for an alternative platform for the project and Articulate will end up losing a big sales opportunity. It doesn't make commercial sense.

Would it not be possible for Articulate to update their software, say every six months?

I am unsure if updated software would help you.

Storyline does not offer 1:1 translation of PPT but does allow you to import PPTs.  It is expected that you will need to make changes to the file after inporting beacuse Storyline does not have feature parity with PPT and vice versa.

It may be that this is not the tool you need for this project.  I do not build animations in ppt and normally work solely in SL, I will import clients ppts if provided and expect to make changes (I normally recreate the slides)
