Text Entry Field, "Enter" Key

Aug 28, 2012

Hopefully this question isn't too amateur!

I am building a "try it" software simulation. I want the user to enter some text and then click on a hot spot on the screen. I don't want them to be able to advance to the next slide by hitting the "Enter" key. I want to make sure they click the hot spot after entering the correct text. Is there some way of preventing the "Enter" key from advancing the user?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi there,  is there any update on Marta's issue please?  I'm having a very similar issue.

Alternatively, should I place a feature request for Storyline to have two text field types:

  • single line and
  • multi-line?

That would resolve so many issues with my software simulations and eliminate the need for me to faff around with the text box heights when all I want is a single line text field that doesn't morph into a multi-line text field with scroll bars!

The whole point of a software simulation course is to emulate the end user's actual experience with an application.  On several screens of the applications for which I am creating courses, the user does not press Enter to proceed to the next field -  they either click in or tab into a subsequent field.

The trial and error resizing of a text field to ensure that the user does NOT get scroll bars is unbelievably annoying!

Hi Christiana,

I was able to take a look at the case where Marta worked with our support team and it looks like we were unable to recreate the issue and the text entry fields were corrupt.

It sounds like you may be experiencing an issue more consistently. With your permission, I'd like you to share your project file with our support engineers to investigate what's happening. You can share it privately by uploading it here. It will be deleted when troubleshooting is complete.

Hi all!

I have read through this and unsure if my issue is the same. I have created text entry boxes that are large enough for additional text. I also have a button that reveals a new layer (trigger attached) and have removed the submit option (because I want their text from the base layer to populate onto the next layer.

However, even with large enough text boxes, my users are still hitting enter and its advancing them in the presentation, not even to the next layer, to the next base layer.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Rachel!

Thanks so much for reaching out. So sorry to hear you're running into this issue with text entry boxes.

I see that you've opened a case and you're working with my colleague Ronaziel. Great call, you're in good hands!

We'll continue the conversation over in the support case.

Have a great day and happy developing! ✨
