Text Entry Fields no longer scroll along with long inputs

Jan 24, 2020

This morning, I updated my Articulate360 and Storyline360 applications to the most recent version. Since then, the text entry fields I used in my e-learning have stopped working correctly when processing values that are longer than the entry field itself. Due to privacy concerns, I am unfortunately unable to provide a screenshot or story as an example, but I will describe the problem to the best of my ability in what follows.

In my case, the text entry fields are supposed to mimic entry fields in my company's application. When learners enter a value that is longer than the entry field itself, the text used to move along as the learner was typing. Since this morning however, the field just stops showing text when the border of the entry field is reached, while still processing the input. I checked this through various triggers that were already set to provide feedback to the learner on whether or not they entered the correct value.

I have tried every possible combination in the format shape menu: do not auto fit, shrink text on overflow, and resize shape to fit text with or without text wrapping. The text entry fields used to be set up by default as shrinking text on overflow with text wrapping, but none of these options result in the desired former behavior.

I have temporarily (sort of) fixed this by setting the text font to a size where the entire output would not reach the end of the text entry field, but this is far from ideal as this will be nearly unreadable for learners in the intended output.

Is it possible that this is a bug introduced by the most recent update? Since I did not change anything to the text fields and the e-learning besides updating my application, I believe this to be the case.

Hi Jasper,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry that you ran into the data entry field is not showing the typed text if the text is longer than the entry field. We have reported it to our team as a new bug in Update 36, and continue to keep an eye on it to evaluate how many customers are impacted.

Here's some more detail about how we tackle bugs. I'm really sorry that I can't say when this issue will be fixed, but you're in the right place to stay updated on this bug's progress.

Hi Jasper,

Great news!  We just released another update for Articulate 360, and included a few important fixes that you'll see in the release notes here.

The item you'll be interested in is:
Fixed: We fixed a few issues with data-entry fields. Learners had to click a data-entry field before they could type a response. In some cases, they couldn't select the default text before typing a response. Text didn't always scroll when it was longer than the data-entry field.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here.

Just downloaded the latest update and most of my problems vanished -- thanks :)!!  However, there are still two problems.  To give a bit of context...

I am trying to type into one text box and have any typing transferred to (1) a text entry box on a layer or (2) to another text entry field on another slide. If I type into the second text box, I want the changes to be reflected in the first text entry box. The transfer via variable works well but two of the text entry features don’t seem to work:

1. If the text entry field is only a single line high, the scroll bar doesn’t seem to "kick in"  (and, in the transfer of text back to it, hard line returns are ignored)

2. Scrolling seems to work but the scroll bar doesn’t seem to appear if the text is longer than the field

Thanks for anything you can do.

Gail

Hi Gail!

I'm happy to help!

In order for a scroll bar to appear, you'll need the text entry field to be larger. The line spacing of a text entry field doesn't conform to the input text so I suggest adjusting the text box so all the text input is displayed.

I've attached an updated version of your file to this reply.

Hello Lauren,
Thanks for your reply – and the file. I did change the field size in my project but I had hoped to keep the smaller fields to conserve screen real estate – hence wanting the scroll bars 😊. BTW, in your file, I still don’t get any scroll bars when I type beyond the number of lines of the actual field (although, as I mentioned before, I can still use the mouse to move up or down to see the text at the top or bottom). It would be nice to have a visual cue to the user that this is possible. Again, thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Gail
