Text Formatting in Published Version of Storyline 2

Aug 15, 2017

Hi, I am having issues with text formatting in the published version of my training modules.

In some layers, text formatting defaults to a different text. In the next layer, it restores to the correct format. I have attached 3 screen grabs that show the change in text formatting as you proceed through the training. I've also attached a screen grab shows the module in preview mode within the Articulate software to show what it should look like.

I've also attached a screenshot of this published training on mobile (iPhone) and the issue presents here as well.

The published module can be accessed here: https://www.yvc.org/training-module-project-planning/

I would love help correcting this. Thank you!

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for sharing the font file with me! I took a look at downloaded your font file and your .story file.

I limited my testing to your first slide to make it easier to publish the course, and that version is uploaded here.

What you'll see is that the font is correct on all the areas that do not include a text entry or variable reference. Those areas can't have fonts embedded, and it'll revert to a system font instead.

I tested that link in Chrome within my Windows environment where the font was installed and it worked fine but on my Chrome in my Mac environment where I did not install the font it default to a standard font like Arial when it's using the %Variable% at the start.

Hope that helps clarify!

Hi Amanda,

The text entries are the area where you had the user type in their name, and the reference is where you displayed it and showed it to them. Take a look at the tutorial here on using data entry fields and referencing variables here for a bit more info.

I have seen some users who still want to display what the user entered, and so to ensure that it doesn't impact any other text on the slide they create a separate text box for it.

That way the variable reference (in your case "Hi, %Username%!") is displayed in a default font, while everything else is displayed in the custom font you set up.

Let us know if you need anything else!

Ashley,

That makes sense, but that's inconsistent with some of my other published modules.

In the module linked above, even in areas where there is a variable entry (the name), text is formatting correctly throughout. I've attached a screenshot as an example. Any ideas why it would be different in this case?

Hello! I'm looping back around to this. I have updated all of the fonts in my module to a system font (Arial) but the issue with the font formatting continues. As with before, in some cases areas with a variable reference format correctly while others do not.

I've attached screenshots for reference - first is an example slide in draft form before publication (Draft Module); Then I have two additional shots - one of the published module with incorrect formatting (Published Module_Error) and another where it has worked correctly (Published Module_Correct).

I know that non-system fonts create trouble for Storyline 2, but I had hoped this would solve the problem. Is there another solution?

Hi there, Amanda. What I'm seeing in the incorrect image is the text overflowing the caption. Do the settings for that slide's caption match the settings on the "correct" slide's caption? You can check here:

If that doesn't help, I'm happy to have a look at your updated .story file! With your permission, you can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Hi Crystal - Thanks for a quick reply.

I've check the settings on both shapes and unfortunately, the "correct" version and the "error" version are set exactly the same. (Screen shots attached).

I've sent you my .story file by uploading it to the link provided. Thank you!

Hi Crystal (sorry for the delay in my response).

I created a new storyline file and then imported slides from my original file - when I published, the error continued to appear when I tested in Chrome, but is corrected in Internet Explorer (screen shots attached). Is this common? Anyway ideas on why it is messing up in Chrome or how to fix that?

Hi Amanda! I'm sorry this issue is lingering. I'm asking my team to also have a look at your file to catch anything I've missed.

The main difference between Chrome and Internet Explorer is that Chrome will disable Flash Player by default. When you view your course in Chrome, it is possible you're seeing the HTML5 output. Internet Explorer will only show the Flash output.
