Text not formatting (bolding) consistently in word bubble shape (never for variable text)

Feb 25, 2020

Hello,

I am using the word bubble shapes to create a simulated conversation between a character and a learner. The learner's name is put in through a text variable. Even though their names are bold, when previewing or publishing the content, the variable name is never bolded, and the plain text name of the character is sometimes bold and sometimes not when previewed (I can't determine a pattern). I've even tried copy and pasting the text boxes that do work and changing the text. You can see the difference between the editor and the preview version. Any ideas how I can get the names to actually stay bold?

Also, I noticed that when I click to advance to a new layer, even though I duplicate a previous layer and just add a word bubble at the bottom (nothing should shift), I notice there is always a slight shift in the text when it is previewed or published. It isn't a huge issue, but enough to drive the designer in my a bit crazy. If there is any advice on how I can address that, I'd appreciate it too.

Troubleshooting Steps:

I have made sure that I am viewing the editor at 100% just in case that is messing with the preview.
I have set the word bubbles to resize text and not resize text to fit. Neither made a difference on the shifting text
Thank you,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Happy to help here!

The inconsistencies that you have shown does sound odd! With the text variable, is the formatting set to be bold, or are there variables/triggers in place to adjust the format? What might help is to use HTML formatting tags to retain the text format

In regards to the shift you are seeing, would you be able to share a Peek of the behavior?

Hello Vincent,

Thank you for reaching out. I appreciate it. I looked at the directions for adding HTML formatting to the variable and I don't think that will work because the value (first name) is dynamically created by the user entering their name in the form. The example you shared has the variable value directly entered through the trigger. I experimented and couldn't get it to work, but I may be missing something. Also, it is odd that I can change other properties (color, size, etc.) in other instances of displaying that variable, but I can't bold it in a textbox.

Also, to demonstrate the shift I am seeing, I did upload the .story file to the link you shared for the private upload, as I'm not able to share it through this post.

Thanks,
Matt

I am adding an update to this post in case anyone else encounters a similar situation in the future. Articulate support responded to me after looking at my file, and it seemed to be an issue with the font choice I was using and not formatting the text inside the text box (word bubble) properly. I was using Articulate Light. Vincent realized it fixed when the font was changed to Open Sans. Thank you Vincent for the fix.
