Textbox Nightmares

I'm lost on why textboxes function this way.... trying to backspace to bump the beginning of the text up / resizing the box to achieve the same effect squishes the text and makes font sizes vary (but this font size change isn't indicated on the toolbar).
Surely I must be missing something... if there is ANY way to prevent this from happening please let me know...

What are the textbox autofit properties set to?

I see it was set to shrink text on overflow, what a clunky setting. Thank you for that guidance! Now I get to manually resize all of my textboxes @__@
If you're using slide masters, you can go into the slide master and change the textbox property to either "Do not autofit" or my preferred "Resize to fit text" and it should then apply to the slides.
This is one of my favorite reasons to use slide masters. If I need to adjust something then I can just make the change one place.
