the case of the shifting shadows
Oct 06, 2014
I have a strange effect happening with the shadows on the character in my SL file after publishing. I am using Atsumi, and my client had complained about her shadow looking like she was floating in space. I went ahead and adjusted the shadow settings on the dozens and dozens of slides she appeared in. Under preview she looked fine, but in the published file the shadows moved around seemingly arbitratively and she is floating once again. I have posted a comparison screenshot below.
Is there something I can do to resolve this? I am concerned that I will either have to remove the shadows entirely, making my client unhappy, or spend many many hours of work that I have not budgeted for, saving her each time she appears (the project has over 600 slides) as an image and repasting her in.

Hi Gordon,
I have seen this before recently in Update 6 of Storyline 1 - is that what you're using? It appears when modifying the perspective shadow of the characters. I'd done testing to confirm it worked ok in Update 5 and Storyline 2 - so if you have either of those set up we'll want to take a look at your file. If you're using Update 6 please let me know and I'll add this thread to the existing report filed with our QA team.
Hi Ashley,
Yes, I am using update 6. If I understand what you are sayng that means there is no workaround? I guess I am going to have to break the news to my client.
Hi Gordon,
In the issue I've seen before, it occurs when you apply the perspective shadow and then make a change to the formatting of the shadow seems to cause the issue. Other than that, I don't know of another workaround - but if you need a link to download update 5 based on this issue, please let us know.
I think it would be problematic to change to update 5. I am afraid if I uninstall SL, and then reisntall SL 1.5 I might run into more issues... things like with my already created custom templates, custom players, and custom color schemes, etc then it will be worth.
Thanks.
Certainly understand the hesitation Gordon, and I'll keep you posted here on if I hear anything from our QA team regarding this issue.
This problem is still there on SL2 update 9. Sample file attached. Feature request submitted. Come on Articulate - I've submitted three feature requests in three days, two for glitches not features. Please fix the non-wrapping text in text entry fields, add metric or system prefs to text box formatting options, and this. Thank you.
Hi Steven,
This has been submitted to our QA team as a bug, so no need to submit a feature request - but what I'll do is take your feature request and send it along to our Support Engineers so that they can test your file and confirm it's the same issue reported here in regards to the perspective shadow on Characters misbehaving when you adjust the shadow properties.
You'll hear from someone on our team shortly.
The other two items are considered features, so I appreciate you sending them along.
UPDATE.
If you add a drop shadow to a character, then change one of that character's states to facing left or right then the drop shadow preview for that state is displayed wrong (almost off the screen in some cases). This wrong display is limited to the states preview tab and the edit view of the slide. If you view the slide in preview mode the drop shadow is in the intended position.
The QA team are "looking into this".
Thanks Steven for sharing that update here and I'm glad our team was able to confirm you were running into the same known issue that is shared with our QA team. We'll keep you posted as a part of your case if there are any additional updates.
