Timeline Objects works but when published does not work

Dec 03, 2013

hi, I am developing a storyline with video and have added pictures to pop up at various points in the video timeline. It works fine when I click on the playback button in the timeline area but when I preview or publish the course the last 4 picture pop ups in the timeline do not come up and other pictures sometime appear. I've doubled checked the timeline and everything seems to be set up correctly.

can you help troubleshoot?

Thanks, Trang

Hi Trang,

You've added these pictures within the Storyline timeline to appear at particular points? When you mention other pictures appear, are they pictures that have previously appeared, or they're just appearing totally out of order?

First, I'd suggest to check the following things which could cause odd behavior:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.

If you're able to share your .story file here or even that one particular slide we can take a look at how things are set up.

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your reply. There is only one slide that has a video. Throughout the timeline I have 10 pictures fly in/out at various points in the video. Pics 1-5 work as expected. Pics 6-10 do not work in preview/publish mode. Interestingly when I preview the video in the Timeline it works fine. This is the third .story I have done similar to this and it worked fine up until this point. I have attached the .story for your review.

I am working/saving to a network drive. Simple file name.

I am keep getting a server error when trying to attach the story. Is there another way to get this to you?

thanks, Trang

Hi Trang,

You mentioned working/saving to a network drive, which could be causing erratic behavior in your Storyline file. We recommend creating and editing files on your local drive as described here.  You may want to begin first by importing it into a new Storyline file and working with that on your local drive to see if the behavior continues.

Depending on the file size, it may be too large to load up here in the forums. If you'd like to share it with me privately, you're welcome to send along here.  Additionally, if you have Dropbox you could place the .story file in your Public folder and share the link to that here for us to download.

Hello, we are having the same issue as described, without video.

One slide has objects that fade in by animation, and are placed on the timeline to appear in order A, B, C, D.  The timeline Play button shows the objects appearing in the correct order. But in Preview or Publishing the slide, the objects appear in the order A, D, B, C.  I tried creating a blank SL file, saving it to my local drive, then importing the troubled slides into it, but it changed nothing.  What is causing this anomaly?
