I have been working on a reasonably complex story and have done something that now means for some reason I am unable to use the timeline preview as I build the slides/layers.
If I go back to an earlier saved version it works fine so it is not a software issue.
The weird thing is if I uncheck the "Hide objects on base layer" box in the layer settings the problem goes away.
So, what's the behavior? Does the timeline playhead move at all while previewing? Nothing happens at all? If the story is massive, the timeline preview function usually has a bit of delay. What did you do right before you noticed it not working? i.e. copy a bunch of layers over, copy slides, etc.
Hi, JB -- Sorry to hear of the issues you are experiencing. Please make sure you are working locally as described here, and you may want to try importing the file into a new file. If you are still having issues, you might want to try to repair Storyline.
And if issues persist, I agree with Parashuram: it would be helpful if we could check out your file or a sample to take a closer look.
For the record and for anyone who might be interested though, here is the sample I sent in to the Storyline development team once I found what was causing the problem so they could try to work out what caused this to happen.
You never know, it might help save someone else the hours it took me to find it.

Hello Justin,
I am not sure what could be the reason of such behavior of timeline. Can you share your file? If possible.
