If you are planning to insert the timer in the quiz then you can use the default timer functionality using the result slide options. OR If you want to insert the timer in normal content screen, then you have to use custom JavaScript call back which will set the variable in Storyline and you need to set trigger/condition to jump on when times up.
I think i cant use the default , can you tell me how to use javascript ? i have goe through some of the tutorials but ont have the link to refer it again. it will be great help if you just show me this part

Attached Storyline file.
Publish the file > Open 'story.html' file and add the below code in the file.
JavaScript communication may not work on local machine due to local Flash Security reason, so you have to check the files from the server.
The duration is set in Storyline file, see project variables.

Ohh..code is not displaying here..you have to type from the screenshot above.
You can build this within Storyline as well. It may have some advantages over the javascript timer.
The example file is limited to 20 seconds. You can make the intervals longer or add more seconds, as you like.
