I'm trying to figure out a way to show a timer counting up or down that will show the duration of how long a video is/has been playing. I don't want to show the standard video controls because the user can scroll through the video. Any ideas?
You could create your own timer. There are several ways to do this. I prefer to use a looped motion path animation that provides the 'pulse' for the counter. Here is a rough example that I did for another user a while back. Is that (kind of) what you want?

Yes, something close to that.
See attached the source file. You can adapt this approach any way you want to, e.g. create a timer with min:sec.
