'Timing' variable of objects- what can be interfering with the timing of the timeline?

Nov 10, 2020

Hello All,

I have Storyline 360 project that utilizes the 'timing' feature of objects on the timeline. Specifically, one object appears at a certain start time and shows until the end of slide (this is a button that advances to the next slide). Another object has a specific duration, and then disappears (this is a transparent rectangle that prevents scrolling through a streaming video before it is completed). On some slides, these changes occur several minutes into the timeline. Previously, I'd used triggers connected to the timeline to achieve the same effect. However, this would malfunction due to unknown causes- to make things more difficult, the malfunction couldn't be consistently reproduced. I was hoping this new format would fix the problem. Unfortunately, even after recently investing in the 360 service, the issues continue.

I should say, this set up works most of the time. It works when I test it, and it works for the vast majority of users in my LMS. However, for a minority of users, the 'timing' events simply don't happen, and they are stuck.

So, what in the world could be causing these irregularities? Is the timeline an inherently unstable factor? What could interfere with the timeline failing to, well, count time?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

James

PS The reason for these design decisions is I'd like to use streaming video, and the advantages that come with it. Otherwise, I could trigger off the end of media variable for the native player.

Hi James,

Thank you for reaching out!

It does sound like some irregularities are occurring here. A couple of questions for you about your projects:

  • For the object triggers, do they have any animations applied to them?
  • For the times it malfunctions, do you happen to know what web browsers your learners are using?

If you can share a file experiencing this snag, that would greatly help determine the cause. You can share files in this thread here, or you’re always welcome to share them privately here. We'll let you know our findings and will delete it after having a closer look!
