Translating Variables

Mar 01, 2019

Hi,

I have a few questions around translating Variables:

1. From the three available variable types, i.e. Text, True/False and Number, is it only the Text type of variable that may require translation?

2. If I want to translate a variable, how can I translate variable references and variable names? Are variable references translated while translating slide content? How can I get the list of variables names? How to upload their translations?

3. How can variable references be identified on slide content? Is there any tag or label etc. applied to them?

Thanks,

Ewa

Hi Ewa! You've asked some great questions.

  1. You don't need to translate True/False or Number variables, and you may not need to translate Text variables, either.
  2. Variable names can’t be translated using Storyline's translation process. (Variable values can be translated, just not their names.) As a result, you shouldn’t translate variable references in the exported file unless you also plan to translate the variable names manually in Storyline. Otherwise, translated variable references won’t match their corresponding variable names.
  3. A variable reference looks like this: %TextEntry%. It will always be surrounded by percent symbols.

If you're unsure whether you need to translate a text variable on your slide, share a few screenshots of your project, and we'll try and help!
