Trigger issue to pause media (interactive animation)

Aug 22, 2019

Hi,

I've developed an interactive animation that is supposed to pause on critical parts and ask the learner a question.  They have to answer the question before the media can continue. Problem is that neither the media nor the timeline pauses.  It is a bit of a hit and miss affair.  It doesn't matter if I create cue points and place a trigger on it or if I specify the time.  The media just keeps playing.
Any idea what I might be missing?

Hi Ron,

I did quite a lot of troubleshooting on this one and eventually setup the animation within a new Storyline file and it worked in isolation there.  If I insert it back into the original file scene it breaks. I also picked up that for some reason, Storyline extends the timeline of the media e.g. the media is 76 seconds, but on the timeline it shows much longer, almost 10 seconds longer.  So it's either that or a broken variable causing the issue.

Hello Lisa!

And thanks for stepping in Ron!

One way to do this would be to add a trigger to pause timeline. And then show layer when timeline reaches a certain time. The layer could include the question.

Hi guys,

Thank you so much to be willing to help me.  I did find the gremlin at the end.  It was broken variables on those specific slides that messed up the pause timeline triggers.
Lauren, what you described is exactly how I had set it up, but each question layer had a set of variables to score the answers and that is exactly what caused the issue.
I just wish there was some way that I could track variables to make debugging painless.
