Trigger with Conditions

Mar 14, 2013

Hi,

I am fairly new to Storyline and am struggeling with asking a single hotspot to show different layers dependig on the condition set.   This is what I'm doing and would LOVE and APPRECIATE any help in making this happen.  This happens to be a software course.

I have a systems screen where a user can click a button to view a description.  This button appears on several layers because as the learner clicks through the system that same Description button is available.

  1. The Description button is available on 6 layers of the same slide.
  2. The Descripton button on all 6 layers goes to the same Descption layer so they can view the Description at any point they choose to.
  3. Once in the Description layer there is a back button (in the software) so I put a single trigger on that back button.

Now this is where depending on which of the 6 layers the learner was on when they chose to view the Description....I simply want them to go back to that layer.  SO....I

  1. Placed 6 boxes transparent boxes with different names on the Description layer
  2. Added 7 triggers to the hotspot over the back button
  3. Added a Condition to each trigger saying "Show X layer if X transparent box = normal"

But it is not working...no matter what it is sending me back to the first layer based on the first trigger.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has a suggestion on how to do this.

Hi Sherrie,

Just a quick thought; you may be able to simply this process by using True/False variables, instead. Since you have separate buttons on each layer for the Description layer, this should work pretty well.

I put together a very quick example for you, if you'd like to take a look:

Example for Sherrie

In the example, you'll be able to view each layer. Each layer has the same Description button, to show the Description Layer. I've set the variable adjustments to the buttons on the layers, and I reset them with the "Go Back" button, so you can pretty much loop through them all and still see the correct layers when going back.

I'm also attaching the example file here, just in case you want to take a closer look at how I set this up.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions

Hi Chosieul and welcome to Heroes!

Can you tell us more about the particular slide or triggers that aren't working? Triggers are generally a tricky thing to diagnose without looking at the .story file but here are some things to get you started:

  • You'll want to review the information regarding what order triggers are executed
  • Are you previewing the entire project or just a particular slide or scene? I'd preview the whole thing in case you triggers are jumping from slide to slide or scene to scene.
  • Are you working on your Storyline files as described here?

If you're still having difficulty after checking into that can you tell us more about the set up or what else is occurring?

Hi Ashley,

I kind of found an alternate route using Presenter '13; however in Presenter my video clip is not playing and will need help here as well. As for as my previous issue I have put the triggers in order; however some the triggers will show and slides will not show or advance. The questions in the quiz are truncated and I'm having difficulty managing the alignment. I read in one the articles that this is a known issue. Please advise if there is a workaround. So, in conclusion, if I can get on of the issues resolved it would help tremendously. Thanks in advance! I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Chosieul,

So you've got two projects going - one in Storyline and one in Presenter '13? For the Presenter course, you may want to look first into the Presenter forums and post your query there.

As for the Storyline course, I'm not sure which known issue you're referring to, but there are documented items within the Support articles here. I'm not clear on the issue you're describing though with the items being truncated and misaligned, and wonder if you could share the .story file here with us or even some screenshots?
