Triggers between slides in Storyline

Jun 24, 2020

I'm trying to create a game where the learner selects one of a number of objects in one slide, and the selection is created in the next slide. When that round is over, I want the learner to be able to go back to the slide with all the objects, and choose another one which will be created in a further slide [ie not the same slide as before - I want the record of the first selection to remain].

I had the idea that I could use layers in the second and third slides to recreate the selected object, but can't work out how to set up the trigger between the different slides.  The logic is Show Layer [#] when user clicks Object [#] on sequentially previous slide.

I need it to be on a different slide because there is not enough room on the slide of objects.

Is this even possible?  Or is there another simpler/feasible way to get the same result?

As always, your help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jenn,

Yes, you can do what you want. To make the work, you just need to come at it from another direction.

The states of items in each slide is discreet, and only effects the current slide. What does persist from slide to slide though, is variables. You can create a variable and save a value into it, and then retreive that value on another slide. This gives you a great way to communicate information from one slide to another.

So, how do you make this work? You set your object to have several states that can be toggled, and you set the state of the object based on the value of a variable when the slide starts. You can now change the variable on any slide, and when you come back to the first slide, the objects display based on the state of the variable.

I do this type of interaction often, and it works like a charm. I hope I've explained it well enough. Please let me know if you need more information.
