Trouble with drag-and-drop feedback/snap back to original position

Mar 28, 2016

Hello all,

I am working on a drag and drop interaction, and I have triggers set up to display feedback when the user drops an element on the wrong target; that part is working okay.

But I also have the properties set up to snap the item back to its original position if it is not dropped on the correct target.  And I find that displaying the incorrect feedback layer prevents the item from snapping back.  It stays on the incorrect target.

Is there a way to allow the item to snap back and simultaneously display feedback?

I have attached the Storyline file.   I have it set up to drag the characteristics from the upper-left corner to the correct bin on the screen.  There are 6 bin choices.  If you Preview it, the first characteristic (Reduces chances of...) comes up.  If you drag it to the Telemedicine-Pro bin, the positive feedback comes up.  However, if you drag it to any of the other bins, the negative feedback comes up and, once you return to the main layer, the characteristic remains on the incorrect bin instead of snapping back.

Any suggestions on how I might fix this?

Thanks

Amit

Hi Amit,

I'd agree with Phil here. Adding in your own custom triggers removes the built in functionality of the drag/drop options such as the snap back or automatically updating the state of each item to the dropped correct/incorrect. If you used the states that are built in (which you still do have to create) and function as designed here that may provide for a better set up.

Hello Phil and Ashley,

Thank you kindly for your responses.  I've played around with the states a bit and I came up with the attached Storyline so far.  I can get it to show the Correct layer (and Hide the item) by using States, but when I want to show one of the incorrect layers (when the object is dropped on the wrong bin), I'm finding that I still need the trigger to say "when object dropped on" whether or not I'm using a state.  And that's what makes the object stick to the incorrect bin.

Did you mean for me to completely remove the freeform Drag-and-Drop?  If I do that, I can't drag the items at all and I don't see how states would fix that.

I apologize for my ignorance here.  I'm usually pretty good with Storyline, but I can't seem to lick this issue.  Any further help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Amit

I see what you did.  I didn't realize that I didn't need the correct/incorrect triggers.  Now, when I pull the object over an incorrect bin it sometimes shows the incorrect feedback, but sometimes it just shoots back to the original location without showing the feedback.

Not sure why that is happening, but I'm going to try to figure it out.

You have been extremely helpful and I sincerely appreciate it.
