Trouble with Numeric Entry Variables and Conditions

Jan 24, 2013

Hi All,

I am having a lot of trouble with part of a quiz that I have for a client. The question is basically about filling a gap with the correct shims and with the correct amount. The question is answered by typing in the amount of shims required in each numeric entry field (of which I have nine).

I have successfully added a number of variables and conditions to branch to a different slide if correct or to the correct feedback layer (dependant on how wrong they are). But some of the variables seem to be cancelling each other out.

Is there someone who wouldn't mind taking a look at what have done who can offer a solution?

I have attached the question for clarity

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Luke,

I took a quick look - couple things that may be causing problems, but I haven't run any "tests"

 When I look at your "set shim variables and compare them to the locations on the slide, they don't all match: so Set shim3 and set shim4 are matched up with the items in the list;
    BUT

Shim5 in the trigger list has a set shim13 variable; shim 7 has a setshim12 variable; shim 8/set shim11; shim 11/set 8; shim 12/set 7; shim 13/set 5

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for spotting that however it didn't fix my issues.

All possible variations seems to have a trigger to send the course to the required layer/slide except when you get the question wrong while using the correct shims (shims 3, 4 and 5). You can type a number anywhere else and you get the correct feedback but nothing on the this shims section.

Any other suggestions?

I have attached the updated file.

Hi Luke,

At this point, no. I think I'd need to understand more about how it's supposed to work. I don't know anything about shims, and so don't completely understand when incorrect layers vs try again are supposed to be triggered. I can get the question right by inputting the number you show in the "Jump to next slide" trigger, and it does jump to the next side. Otherwise, it's too hard for me to decipher what's supposed to trigger the layers.

I did have one question: is there a reason that instead of hiding each layer you're choosing to jump back to the base slide? Probl'y doesn't matter, but point of information for me. I thought maybe it was because you wanted Learners to start again, but the side isn't set to "reset to initial state."

Hope someone jumps in, Luke!

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks anyway for your help.

To quickly explain the question (but you are right it is quite complicated), there is a gap to fill and the shims fill that gap, there are three types of shims that are different shapes. The correct answer is choosing the correct thickness, the correct shape of shims and the correct amount,  a try again is choosing the correct shape and thickness but not getting the amount correct, if you select the wrong shape of shims (regardless of amount or thickness) you will get the wrong shims used feedback.

Unfortunately I can't share the closer details as it will interfere with our NDA.
