Trouble with show/hide captions

I'm trying to do something that seems easy but isn't working....I'd like to attach 6 different captions to 6 of the 12 squares on the grid so when the user clicks on one of those the caption changes.
I've been troubleshooting this for a few hours now and tried several approaches and it seems like it will work sometimes then not other times, and just not sure what to do next here. Attached is a screenshot of how the variables are set up and here's a link to the live version:

Appreciate your advice on how to get this to work!

Hi Joe
easier to help if you could upload the story file so folks can check your triggers.
Also you don't need the triggers to change state to visited - SL knows automatically what action to take with it's built in states.
Hey Joe, total guess here, but is your initial state in the pull down menu for caption States not set to hidden at start?
Here's the current source...and yes, 1 caption shows by default, the others are set to hidden in the beginning.
Hi Joe
see if the attached works for you.
I created a visited state on your square using the checkmark instead of having that as a separate element.
I also created the caption as one object with 5 states and triggered that to change depending on which squares they visited.
I renamed the squares top 1,2,3 mid 1,2,3 bot 1,2,3 so I could work out which element was what.
Hope that helps

Sorry file didn't attach
Wendy, thank you!! That was really nice of you to take a look at this.
It works perfectly if you move from top to bottom, left to right, but as you pick the squares randomly, it seems to get stuck on phrases. For example, if you go from bottom to top, right to left, it shows only one phrase. Do you know what the issue might be?
