TTS translation

I am using text-to-speech for the audio in my project but would also like to provide the course in multiple languages.  How can this be done in Storyline 360?  Or is there a work around option?

Ned’s file that he attached is a great example how to use variables, triggers, and layers to determine what should be played based on the user’s language selection.

What’s more time consuming is to get the language files created – you need to have the text files for the language, you have to paste into Storyline, and then generate the audio for each file.  It’s a daunting task and it will take time to do it.

I created an application recently though that may be able to help streamline your process just a bit.  You’ll have to go to the source that Storyline uses, Amazon Polly voices.

Here’s what you would do:

  1. Get an Amazon Polly account (yes, there is some cost involved but doesn’t seem that prohibitive) (https://aws.amazon.com/polly/)
  2. Save your scripts as separate files (MS-Word or Text) – I would create separate directories for each language
  3. Download HeroVoice TTS from the Microsoft Windows Store (fully functioning 15-day free trial)
  4. Select the language and voice you want for the first set of files – these are the same as you’ll find in Storyline today including Neural voices (which aren’t currently available in Storyline)
  5. Encode your files with HeroVoice TTS – apply a global setting for speed and even comma duration so your files are consistent.
  6. After the first set is complete, repeat this process
  7. Load each audio file into Storyline 

Yes, it will still take time but I think you’ll see with HeroVoice TTS’s ability to batch process files, you’ll end up saving time.
