I'm not sure there is a "clever" way to do this, other than having 2 parallel "tracks" of the course in seperate scenes, and having a button/trigger system that allowed you to jump between identical slides (except the background) on the 2 tracks.
Well, if your background is just another object on the slide, you can always add a button that hides it.
I'd probably also add some variable magic to that button that sets a value for a variable. Only show object background when your variable = true. Then hide it when the variable = false. Then add a slide trigger to each slide to only show the background when the variable = true.

I was assuming it would be in the Slide Master, but you are correct - it does not need to be.
