Turning Resources on and off using a variable

I am wondering if anyone has found a way to turn the Resources tab on or off with using a variable. This would make it very easy to display the resources tab on the left or right at a click of a button. The same would apply for the menu tab.

The reason for this is I have a situation where it would be better to have the Resource tab on the left hand side but only visible when it you click a button because it takes up  screen real-estate. At present the only way I can do it is to have a 2nd slide for each which shows resources on one and no resources on another. Now it is not much work but it adds a lot to the size of the zip file and course loading times. So turning on and off via a variable would be so much better and easier
