Unable to get Pre-created storyline dial to change position within states on a results slide

May 04, 2018

Hi there,

I have searched and I have watched the creation of dials, and I have done a custom dial using states before.  This time I thought it would be faster if I used the dial that storyline pre-created to show a percentage of a results slide.

In this attachment I purposely made each percentage a different colour so I could see if it works.  But I usually would go into Edit States and on the 25, 50 , 75 and 100 I would just rotate the dial, I can't figure out why I can't.  Each time I edit one state and move the dial it is moving it on all of the states.

Second issues was I used to for Success/Fail layers, say If Results Score Percent is equal to variable Results Pass Points  then it is Success, but layer wouldn't show, I could only get it to work if I said is equal to value 100.

I don't want to waste alot of time for something that I was just doing for some fun, and not truly needed, thought the students might find it engaging, but I was shocked the dial moved on all the states...any help would be great!

Hoping it is an easy fix I am overseeing...

Hi Teresa

You have a corrupt result slide. If you look at your variables list only the result.scorepercent has been created.

When you insert a result slide SL automatically creates 4 system variables:

  • Results.ScorePoints
  • Results.PassPoints
  • Results.ScorePercent
  • Results.PassPercent

So I would look at inserting a new result slide and work from there

Hi Wendy
The results does work using the value option, but I can try and recreate that. I am more concerned with the dial in the states...that I can’t adjust so my triggers work...

The triggers work with regard to the score I just can’t get the dial picture to change in the states

Thanks

I also wonder if you don’t see those results as I did squirm copy and paste of these slides from a larger elearning if I think about it I thought I saw them in the drop down list.  I used a blank results slide and I am in the latest update so will check that on Monday.

But if you have any idea why I can’t change the location of the dial in the states that would be great 😀

Hi Teresa

I think it's working how you want but I would be changing the dial position pointer in the states so that it points to 50 / 75 / 100 as currently they are all set to 25.

Your result slide was corrupt - when I tried to insert a new result slide no variables were created so I assumed the whole file was corrupt.

I created a new file and imported all your scenarios in but not the result slide then inserted a result slide and added the dial. So you'll need to reformat the result slide as it's the default one

The points allocated to the scenarios also didn't = 100 so the potential to not reach the 50 75 or 100 was there.  Some were score of 10 some 20 some 25 but the four did not equal 100. I made them all 25 but you can set them to what you want - be careful that the combinations - your requirement of 25, 50, 75 or 100 or again the states won't change.

Here is a peek video where I get two answers correct

Thanks Wendy. I didn’t realize the points had to equal the dial values because I did the score by percent so that is good to know. I will try and redo the dials. They were all left at 25 because every time I tried to change a state by moving the dial it changed all of them. That was my main problem I couldn’t get the dial to sit at different spots for each state which I thought you could do, but I will try again.

Thanks

see attached update - I use the variable DialResults1 in the trigger to turn the dial but it won't allow me to change the background colour of the dial in the states.

If you wanted different colour states you'd need to create images of the dial at different points and then add those into the states.  You'd then use the 'change state of dial' trigger.

So you either use the dialresults variable in the trigger to move the dial position based on score but the dial look will stay the same but move to correct position OR

make images of the dial in the different positions with your coloured backgrounds and use the trigger change state.

Thanks Wendy, I think the variable is a better idea, I am okay with same colour.  But at least now it makes sense why I couldn't get the States to change as that is not how the dial would normally work.  Thank you so much for your help.  I am going to go look at my original and see the corrupt file and see if I can rebuild like yours...  Much appreciated as always, this forum has been a fantastic help for me.

Oh sorry Wendy, going to bother you one more time.  When I open the file, no matter the score the dial is showing at 100%.  So when I score 25% the dial is going to 100...I again tried adding states and just moving the dial keeping the colours the same but it moves the location of the dial on all states.  I sense I can't do what I want with a pre-made dial...hmmm

I again tried adding states and just moving the dial keeping the colours the same but it moves the location of the dial on all states.

It will - if you want to use states and not the actual variable associated with the dial you will need to physically move the dial on screen, then take a snapshot of the dial at that point (with the coloured background), then move the dial again (another snap) move the dial again (another snap) - each of these snapshots will be images that you use in the states tabs.

Here is a rough peek video of what I mean.

If you want to share the file I can take a look at what the 100% is but I expect it has to do either with the wrong variable being referenced or the design options selected
