Unable to hear audio when editing or playing in storyline

Apr 23, 2013

Hi, I have inserted mp3 audio files into my storyline slides but I can't hear them when previewing or trying to edit the audio.  Can you help?  Kathy Cairns

Hi Kathy!

Are you able to play the same MP3 file outside of Storyline? When you do, are you able to hear the audio playback?

Also, you may want to make sure that the audio files you're inserting are on your local hard drive.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks,

Christine

Hi there Kathy!

Thanks for getting back to me :)

Are you able to try converting the audio file into another format? I think it may be an issue with the current format, but without trying the file myself, it's hard to say.

Another thing you can try is to test the file in a new project. Create a blank Storyline course and try importing the MP3. Does the same thing happen?

If you don't have any luck with the new file, are you able to share the MP3 file here? I'd be happy to test it on my end.

Thanks!

Christine

Hi Lucia,

Have you confirmed you're working locally as I mentioned earlier?

Also, can you see the audio files in the project at all? Or do they simply not play when you try to play them in the slide, while previewing, etc.?

If you could provide a little more information on what's happening, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

I am having the same issues. I am working locally, with a short file. I tried converting it to an MP3 (from a WMA). I can hear both files outside of Storyline 2. I can see the audio files. I cannot hear them in either preview mode or playing it directly from the timeline.  I tried the file in a new project and still couldn't hear it (although the audio file did not make the bottom timing bar in Preview mode work like a graphic would). I also notice that in each of the previews the small speaker volumn icon seems grayed out (at least the level part).

I can't figure this out. Please help.

Hi there,

I am also facing an issue with my audio clip. Can't seem to hear anything (with and without headphones) and the timeline is also showing a flat waveform. I am also working on my desktop and have also tried converting the audio clip to various formats but to no avail.

Have attached a sample of the audio clip here as well as a screenshot of my timeline in SL.

What could be the problem here?

Hi Alyssa,

I used both SL2 and SL3, latest version for both. I have also tried importing that audio clip into SL2 and SL3 on different laptops too, but all faced the same problem.

Hi Ashley,

Sadly, I am unable to share with you our working .story file with you. However, this issue can be replicated on a fresh project, both in SL2 and in SL3. I have attached both .story file here.

To be more specific, if you preview the audio clip in SL, it actually sounds garbled (and soft).

Have attached the audio clip here again for easier reference.

Thanks for those files, Kydon. That's so strange! The MP3 file plays fine outside of Storyline, but it's not working correctly in Storyline 2 or 3 for me either.

I'd like to have our Support Engineers weigh in on this, so I'm going to share your files with them. They'll test everything and email you as soon as they have more to share!
