The trigger to reset the variable currently appears after the trigger that jumps to the next slide. Storyline can't run a trigger if it's already left the slide. That's why the variable isn't adjusted.
It's an easy fix: just move the set-var trigger so it appears before the jump-to trigger. To do that, select the trigger, and then click the up-arrow icon at the top of the Triggers panel.
