Updating Images in a Storyline course
Oct 10, 2016
I am wondering if anyone knows how Storyline keeps up with images. Is there a "link" to images in a folder? Or is each instance of each image stored in the lesson individually (same as PowerPoint)?
The reason I ask is that my company creates courses for our proprietary software in multiple languages. We start with an English version (lots of screen shots). Then translate the software and lesson text. We create the same screen shots of the translated software. It would be lot easier to recreate the lesson if all we had to do was point to a different folder (same image names) and have that version of the lesson reference the new images.
If Storyline keeps each image (and each instance of a reused image) separately, we have to manually update all the images for each language version. This is how PowerPoint keeps up with images and it is very labor intensive to update courses.
Some courses are manually being built in Flash which does use a library/linking function.
Any insights are greatly appreciated!

Hi June,
The images are included in the .story file, so that way if you had to send the file to someone else they'd also have access to the images. Prior to publishing though you could change where they are grabbing the images from (such as the other folder) and then publish out the next language version. It sounds like it may match what you're already doing in Powerpoint though and therefore looking for a shorter way.
Hi Ashley,
What we are currently doing in PowerPoint is going to each slide, selecting each image, then right-clicking and selecting "change picture", then selecting the new image (in another folder) - then repeating - for ALL slides/images, even if an image has been used several times (which is very frequent). We have to select every image on every slide and manually replace.
Was wondering if Storyline had a faster method for updating images! For example "Image 1" in English folder would be used if the .story file was pointed to that folder and "Image 1" in French folder (different image, same name) would be used if pointed to that folder. Then we would only have to create the different versions of the images, point to the correct folder and not have to manually select which was used.
So, would changing the folder path prior to publishing actually update which images are used throughout the lesson?
Thanks,
June
There is no easier way of doing it in Storyline. You have to go to each image and right-click to change the image. The only thing I can suggest to make this a little easier is to place frequently used images in a layout on the slide master so that you only have to make the change on the master. Of course this only really works if you are using the image in a consistent way throughout the course.
Thanks Nancy - not the answer I was hoping for! We will have to kick this around as we evaluate getting Storyline (I REALLY want to get it but...)

Hi June,
Thanks for that explanation and I'm glad Nancy was able to get in here and confirm for you. There isn't a set up within Storyline that has a library of images or similar. Please feel free to let us know if you have any other questions about the use of Storyline.
