I would suggest you consider importing the existing project into a new SL file that you have created with the new template. I'd also suggest you go scene by scene instead of doing a mass import, and depending on what the different elements of the existing project and the new template are, plan on a long day of making corrections...
I would also start by checking that the dimensions of the two project slides correspond. I've had several update efforts that were seriously hampered by the fact that the original and the new base templates were *not quite* the same dimensions...
