Uploading files to web server

Jul 25, 2015

I have used the ftp upload to transfer files to my web server. I have also used filezilla and both methods seem to work. However, I must be doing something incorrectly because I have tried every possible method to link to these files. I have also tried scorm cloud (some success here with tin can lms upload) and then google drive. I am publishing for web and enabling articulate mobile player and these files have all been tested successfully on tempshare. Would somebody be able to take me through it slowly?

very best wishes

Hi Christie,

Yes I have thanks which has helped my understanding. I can upload a normal pdf file and view it so I think that process is right. It just seems to have an issue with the storyline files. I have used the Dropbox method with success but I am not sure how I could use that if I wanted to sell the product, as the code generated could be shared infinitely. I am thinking through this at the moment.

Best wishes

Hi, Helena -- Would it be possible for you to provide a little bit more clarification, please? From within Storyline, are you able to launch your file from the "Publish successful page"? And can you please share a little more info on what is actually happening when you upload something to your web server? Are you able to determine what the correct URL would be? Please note that the URL will be determined based on the path the file is located at on your web server, but the file you launch a presentation with is always the same.

And with respects to Dropbox, I located this thread and the steps outlined below may be of assistance:

1. Create a folder named “Public” (if it is not already there) in your Dropbox account. Next, you will need to visit this page to enable the public folder on your account.

2. Upload your entire published Storyline output folder to Dropbox  into the Public folder

3. Right click on the story.html file and copy the public link

4. Paste that link into your browser to view your course.

Please let me know what more you can, and hopefully that helps!  :)

Hi Christie,

I have been using the Dropbox method you showed me here without any problems. I am going to have a chat with the person hosting my website because I don't think this is a storyline issue. Thanks for your help and I will come back when I have a bit more information.

Thanks

Helena

I have tried to follow this process to upload to Dropbox for sharing.  I find that I can only upload files and not folders so I can't upload the entire output folder of my course.  I did upload the individual files in the output folder that are not in sub-folders and copied the link to the story.html file but it didn't work when I emailed the link and then clicked on it in the email.

Hi Geoffrey,

Did you recently get a Dropbox account? I know the public folder isn't included in the latest Dropbox accounts, but you should still be able to upload folders. Have you reached out to Dropbox to see if there was a specific setting that needed to be changed in your account?  Here's how to enable the Public folder in case that gets you situated without much interference from Dropbox.

If you're just looking at needing a quick testing platform, you may want to look at Tempshare: This is a free service provided by Articulate for testing Storyline content. Note: Uploaded files will be deleted after 10 days.

Thanks Ashley. It’s an old Dropbox account and there is a public folder which is enabled. I tried again to upload the folder but nothing happened. I did upload the files but when I emailed it to myself and clicked on the link there were files missing so it wouldn’t play. I have used Tempshare up to now (and it’s great) but I need to have somewhere to house the files for longer than 10 days. I’ll check with Dropbox to see if there’s a setting that needs to be changed on my account.

Assuming I get this right, can I ask you another question? If I copy the link to the file and send it to someone, that is the link to a file for viewing on PC. If they want to view on a mobile device such as an iPad I would have to send them the story.html5 link - is that correct?

Hi Geoff,

First I wanted to let you know that responding via email includes your signature here so you're welcome to edit the post and remove that information if need be.

As for the file to point to, if you use the story.html link and you have also published for HTML5 then the story.html file will be able to determine which version to show your users based on how they access it. You can read more about that here.
