Urgent question re 'Test' function for screen recording

Sep 24, 2014

Hey there

Does anyone have any suggestions with the best strategy to use for assessing a user's competency in using a database via an online course?

Im using Storyline (1) and trying to set up a 'test' function of a screen recording where the user has to complete mutliple free text fields.  The problem i'm having is that Storyline seems to insist that they have to type the exact same example i used in the screen recording, but I want them to be able to use whatever free text they want without getting them getting marked as 'incorrect'.

Would people suggest I don't use the 'Test' function and just create separate quiz slides for each function i'm assessing them on?

I need to get this course completed on Monday so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks very much

Hi Nicola!

My initial thoughts:

If you are assessing the learner on some aspects of the database software, but not others, you could simply record the process as you have, but then for the free form text entry (where you're not worried about what they type), you could simply insert a dummy test slide in place of the text entry slide that currently is forcing them to type the exact same thing.

Basically, you'd duplicate the look of the slide, add a text entry field, remove the next and previous buttons in storyview, add the submit button in storyview, and set the submit button to jump to the next slide if the text field is not equal to blank.  You could also add a feedback layer asking them to fill in the text field if they click the submit button, but haven't entered anything in.  I've attached a sample dummy slide for your reference.

I hope this helps.  There are ways that you could create a similar "dummy" question and have it be graded, but that's another animal!  If that's your goal, let me know and we can go down that path next.

Hey Mike thanks for your reply!

Basically the course im doing is for people doing it as a refresher and new staff, so i was intending to have a test upfront that would allow them to either finish the course after the test if they scored high enough, or to complete the whole course if they scored too low.

I don't care as much about the text theyre entering in the fields (as its just generic info like caller's name, address etc) but its more about ensuring they are clicking into these fields in the first place and navigating to correct areas on the page.

Does that still fit in with your suggestion of the duplicate look slide?  I was just trying to understand properly what you were suggesting.

Thanks
