Use of Previous button

Jul 01, 2015

In the past, I have not used the Previous button in my presentations because it caused lock up problems. I've now upgraded to Storyline 2 and much to my dismay, the Previous button continues to cause the presentation to freeze. The only additional step I've used in the slides is that I create a constraint that will not allow the Next button to become active until the audio completes but in my opinion, this should not have any impact on the Previous button. Anybody have any ideas or solutions?

Hi, Rocky -- Sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties. I agree with Richard; it would be great if we could take a look at your file to see the behavior you are describing. Also, would you be able to run through a few general troubleshooting steps to see if we can rule out the causes of a few common errors?

Please make sure you are working locally as described here, and you may want to try importing the file into a new file. If you are still having issues, you might want to try to repair Storyline. Also, could you please ensure that you are utilizing the most recent SL2 Update? Info on Update 5 can be found here

Good morning Richard and Christie,

Thank you both for your prompt responses. I just confirmed that SL2 is up to date. I had the same trouble with the default previous button on the player 18 months ago when I first published this training program but decided to leave it out of the program. Although the training has been well received, I continually get complaints about “no back button”; especially when I use videos. Since I need to have the updates to this program completed by next week, what I have done in the short term is to use a control and create a previous button on the slide which works great other than the fact it does not reset the slide. However, they have the narration in the notes alongside the player.

If you like, I can provide a stripped down version of some of the slides for your review since the complete package is too large to send. As always, any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. And BTW, I love SL2!

HI, Rocky -- Thank you for your response. I wanted to let you know when you reply via email that your attachment does not appear here in the threads. Please feel free to use the Add Attachment button in the bottom left corner of the posting box in the thread itself to share your pared down version.

Also, when you reply via email, your signature information is displayed publicly here in the threads, so you are welcome to edit to remove those details if you wish.

And, we are thrilled to hear you love SL2! :)

Thanks Christie. Regarding the signature block, I work for a state agency so it’s public anyway. Thanks again.

Hi, Rocky -- Sure thing regarding your signature block, but unfortunately, I still don't see your .story file. If you sign into the forum itself, there should be an "Add Attachment" button in the bottom left corner of the box you would use to post a reply here in the thread (as seen below).  Or, you would also be welcome to use this form to submit your file privately.

Hi Rocky,

When you write: "...create a previous button on the slide which works great other than the fact it does not reset the slide..." In order to reset the slide, go into the layer's propreties and set the "When revisiting" to "Reset to initial state" and the slide should start over to the beginning.

Concerning videos, there is a lot of option when go into the "edit video" setting that would facilitate your UI. For I, I made custom graphic overlay for video that are intuitive à la "Youtube".

Don't fear customizing you .story. SL2 is robust enough to take it.

Regards

Yes, I will be sharing a scene (17 slides) from the training. I just need to push ahead with some changes to the presentation first since I’m on a tight timeline to complete it. I agree that this forum/community is fantastic.

Hi Christie,

I posted a response with the attachment but for whatever reason, I received an error from the browser. It may have been too large of a file (300+mb). I’ll recreate the file again on Monday and remove the video that was embedded. I should have thought about that before!

Hi Christie,

Per our previous conversation, attached is a sample of the slides I've used in training. As I mentioned before, I cannot use the default PREV button in the player since it causes the program to lock up.

Hi, Rocky -- Apologies for any confusion, but I still have not received your file. When you receive an email, you can directly access the forum thread by clicking on one of the 2 areas highlighted in the screenshot below.

From there, once in the thread, you would click on the "Add Attachment" button in the bottom left corner of the box you would use to post a reply (as seen below).

That should allow you to browse to upload the .story file into the thread.

Other options available for submission:

You may also submit your file privately to me using this form or you may send your file directly to our Support Engineers using this form

Hope that helps! :)
