Use of the Resume feature for courses that are already completed

Jan 21, 2019

Thanks for any advice - upon clicking Yes to Resume on a course that I have previously completed, I am taken to the last page of the course which contains my previous assessment result (pass or fail).  That previous result is being passed to the LMS again as a result of opening the file and selecting Resume however, I have not retaken the assessment.

How do we get the system to take users back to the beginning of the course (if they have previously passed), or take them back to the assessment to redo it (if they have previously failed)?  We would still require users that have not completed, to be able to resume where they left off.

Hi there, K S.  Resuming a course will return your users to the last slide they visited, and there won't be a way to condition that actual function based on passing or failing the assessment.

Here's a design idea to workaround returning to the results slide.  You could create an "exit" button on your results slide which actually brings them to a final slide that:

  • includes a button to restart the course
  • and says something like, "You may now close the browser window.  Click below if you'd like to restart the course."

You could even create a different final slide for each of the success and failure layers that will restart the course, or reset and retry the assessment.

Thank you for the tips Crystal - just to clarify, the issue takes place when a user selects Yes to Resume when they go back to their course at a later time after closing it.  The LMS reporting seems to think that the scorm file has passed a new completion result, but in fact it has only repeated and resent the previous (or suspended) result from last time - when the user simply reopens the file and clicks Yes to Resume.   So in summary, the user opens the course, Resumes and then is presented with the last slide they visited which was the results slide - then that old result is sent to the LMS as a new result which is obviously incorrect.  Do you think having an extra slide at the end like you mentioned, might help resolve the issue?  Thank you very much, K.

Thank you Alyssa, unfortunately it did not work - a new completed attempt was registered showing the old result again on today's date, even though I only opened the file, clicked Yes to Resume and landed on the new Exit Page which had been added after the Results page.  Any further suggestions would be gratefully appreciated, thank you.
