User choice to display menu

Apr 09, 2013

Hi all

I am working on a new employee orientation project in Storyline. It has an intro scene and four scenes for different types of benefits. Each benefits scene has a screen with a list of checkbox items. The idea is for them to click on an item, view that info and use the Prev button to return to the checklist and select another item. During testing we found out that if we display the menu some people will use that to navigate and we dont want that for new employees. The problem is that we would also like to use this as a reference resource for staff that arent new. As it currently works the veterans would have to navigate through several slides to get to the checklist slides. Im sure they would rather just see the menu and make a selection of which item they want to view and Id rather not have two versions to keep up. So my question is - is there any way to set up the story so that the default for the menu is OFF and then have a button that will display the menu? Im guessing if it can be done, it would be a variable of some sort but the only variable Ive created so far is to enter participant name and I have no idea how to go about this, if its even possible. Thx for any assistance you all can provide.

Hi FEB! Welcome to E-Learning Heroes,

There isn't really a feature that will doexactlywhat you'd like, unfortunately. However, there are a couple of options that may work for you.

The first option (and the one I think may work very well for your course), is to move the "Menu" into a tab of the player. This way, it will be out of the way and the employees won't think this is the navigational option for the course. This will also be a quick way for your veterans to access whatever content they want from the menu.

To try this out, click on "Player" in the "Publish" menu section in Storyline. Here, you're going to see a section for "Player Tabs". By default, the menu is listed under the "Sidebar" section of this list. Click on "Menu" and then use the "up" arrow in the lower right-hand corner of this list.

Now here you can move this up to either the "Topbar Left" or "Topbar Right" sections - just choose a side where you'd like the menu tab to show.

Here's an example of what a menu tab looks like when opened and closed in a course, using the Topbar Left option:

The other option is to build a custom menu. This, obviously, will be more time-consuming, but you may prefer the customization available with this option. You could build the menu using shapes, layers, states, triggers and variables and completely control when the menu is open, closed and what the button/link looks like on the slide.

I hope this information helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Christine
