User created list displaying in a smaller font

Feb 26, 2016

Hi there,

I'm trying to use a variable to extract text out of a user editable text field and display it on the next page.

On slide 1 I have created a text box and encouraged the user to create a list of everything they can think of relating to a particular subject. I've then set a trigger which sets whatever the user has written in the text box as 'variable1' when they click the 'Next' button, taking them onto slide 2.

I then wanted the user's list to display on slide 2 so they could compare it to my list.

The problem I'm having however is that when you create a list in the text box on page 1, and link to it via a reference/ variable field on slide 2, the user's text gets crammed into a tiny font. Is there any way round this? I've tried increasing the font size of the reference field but to no avail.

It seems to be the more text you put in the box on slide 1, the smaller the text on slide 2?

I've attached screenshots.

Hi, Tom -- Many thanks again for your patience while I checked out your file! I wanted to share a link to your published output so you can take a look at how it behaves on the SCORM Cloud (which is the industry standard for LMS testing).

As you can also see in the sreenshots below, I do not appear to be experiencing the issue you've shown in the screenshot you provided, so I think the trouble is not with the file itself, but rather where it may have been tested.

Please see this article for more information on Publishing and Sharing SL2 Content, because "If you view an Articulate Storyline course on your local hard drive (or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive), you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail."

Hey Christie,

Thanks for looking into that. I logged onto the link where you published the output, but I'm still having the same issue (see screenshot). Maybe it's a browser issue? I'm using Chrome v48.0.2564.116 m. I also had the same issue in IE.

It doesn't seem to make a difference for me where it's published...

Hi, Tom -- Thanks so much for your reply, and that is certainly peculiar, as I pulled those screenshots from Chrome  48.0.2564.116 m, as well.

Just in case you'd like to check it out or keep it handy, here is our System Requirements sheet for SL2. I am going to reach out to some of my colleagues to request that they test the link to see if they encounter the same error you are experiencing, as well. If not, I may need to put you in touch with our Support Engineers for additional investigation.

Hi, Tom -- Many thanks again for your patience as we took a closer look at the issue you are seeing. Initially, it was suggested that perhaps having the "Shrink text on overflow" box checked as described here was contributing to the behavior, but then this information on Text Changes Size When It Includes a Variable Reference was also shared. Please review those articles and let us know if you need anything more. :)

Hey Christie,

Thanks for that. I had a look at those bits but unfortunately I still had no luck. I have found a workaround however that seems to work, based on your second link.

On page 2 I had inserted the reference into a text box, which automatically sizes itself to the text within (just the reference). I switched that for a shape, popped the reference in there and made it as big as the possible list. Then I made the shape white with no border so it blended in with the background. Works now!
