Using audio with markers in Storyline 2

Dec 04, 2014

Hey Gang,

I was teaching a Storyline 2 class today and demonstrating how to insert audio into a marker. We noticed that the audio does not play as expected when you go to preview the slide and click on the marker. I even tried publishing the course to see if it would play that way, and still no luck. What's interesting, is the you can click on the icon's format tab, click on the audio drop-down and preview the audio that is suppose to be there. It's just not playing when you preview the actual slide.

I also duplicated the process in Storyline 1 and had no issues--the audio played just fine.

Is this a current bug? Attached is the Storyline 2 file where I am experiencing this. All of my Storyline 2 students had the same issue, so I don't think it's just me.

THANKS!

Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for sharing that here, and I do see an issue that was reported yesterday about audio in markers not working as expected. It seems the current workarounds were to import that slide into a new file, or markers set to audio only worked as expected. Have you checked Steve's suggestion as well in terms of it working as expected in brand new files, but only seeing the behavior in upgraded files?

I'm going to add this thread to the existing report filed, and if you have any other information to share please let us know!

I have markers that are not playing their recorded audio. I am running SL2, update 2.  I tried to import the slide with markers into a new file. This did not solve the problem. I have been working on this file for about a month and I am pretty sure I'm just experiencing the problem today. I was ready to deliver the course today but now I won't meet my deadline. I'm pretty frustrated...

I am having the same issue with one of my SL2 courses. I tried downloading Tim's file and could not hear the audio. My slide was imported from a SL1 file, so i tried creating new markers but the audio still wouldn't work. Just wanted to share in case it helps! Also, I am running the most up-to-date version :)

Hey. This issue is easily reproducible. Ashley, why don't you try creating a new SL2 project and add a few markers. Then add audio to each of the markers and then preview it. Does the audio play when you hover or click each marker? It doesn't for me either.

I also noticed that some of the markers do not work as expected. For example, some of the markers text boxes expand when you click them, others don't. They all display the text, but just that some of them expand to the draw size you set on the slide, and others simply don't expand to that size at all.

The markers all seem to work perfectly in SL1. What could have happened with SL2 to create the mischief!

I can hear the audio in Tim's file too. When I create a new marker and choose audio only an audio track will play. But the original imported audio from SL1 still does not play when the marker is clicked. The audio was saved directly to the marker in SL1 so I don't have an audio file to use to create a new marker in SL2. Or do I? Can I gain access to the original audio file?

I have added a support ticket late on Friday but have not heard boo from anyone from the support team today.

Hi all,

Thanks for sharing additional information here. When I published Tim's file, I was using Storyline 2 update 1, but I see that this issue has recently been reported to our QA team in regards to Storyline 2 Update 2 - does that match the set up that you're all seeing this in? I have updated to Update 2 since testing Tim's original file, and now I cannot hear the audio in the marker, and have added this thread to the existing QA report filed.

David, in regards to the other marker issues you mentioned, it sounds inconsistent? Are you able to share an example for us to take a look at or have you already opened a Support case? If so, can you share the case number with us here?

I have been told these are some possible work around

1. Set the marker to audio only. This only works if there is no text in the marker caption.

2. If the audio is in a separate file, create a trigger to play the audio.

3. Go back to the original storyline1 file and export the audio to a file. I'm trying to do this now.

I believe the problem occurred when I updated Storyline 2 to update 2.

Best, Julie

Update: I was able to go back to Storyline 1 audio markers to export the audio and place manually in the slide and add numerous triggers. So now Storyline 2 Update 2 works as it should. I was also able to get a zip drive of Storyline 2 update 1 so that I don't have to usse update 2 any more. If you use markers, I wouldn't update SL2 to update 2. Lots of work which I had to eat.
