Using Flash files as buttons in Storyline

Jun 27, 2013

Hi All

So I'm working on a module for a client that is quite keen on the new Windows 8 interface (with animated buttons and such)

Now I created these animated buttons in Flash thinking that I could then add a trigger to jump to the next slide, like I would to a caption or picture in Storyline, however I can't do this for some reason.

My colleague and myself tried using invisible buttons (and even hotspots) but that doesn't work, it just covers the flash file so the roll over does not trigger.

Is there anyway to work around this? I'm getting quite desperate

Thanks in advance

Stephen

Hi Stephen!

Welcome to the community! I know you've mentioned you already created the buttons in Flash, but is there any way you can recreate them directly in Storyline. I dont know what your buttons look like.... but you can probably achieve a similar look using shapes, text, icons, etc. right in Storyline, and you can apply your Hover, Down and Visited states in Storyline also....

Just did another quick test with an animated button that I created a long time ago. I could still attach a trigger to it, but when I preview the file and try to click on the center it won't work, It will only work when I have the mouse on the edge of the button. Maybe its something in the flash file that causes this? Hopefully a tech at Articulate can answer this.

Hi Nicole

unfortunately I can't imitate the same effect in Storyline because the animation has been masked, if there's a way for me to recreate the effect that would be awesome (see attached swf for the animation).

Hi Jerson, I checked now if I needed to update my Storyline but it says it's up to date and it doesn't register that there's a trigger attached even if I try hovering from the side.

Unfortunately this is one of the failings of storyline,  not able to make swf objects triggerable (properly) and I couldn't figure out how to make the actionscript work for the storlyine output.

This is just a shot in the dark, but maybe you can create the same effect in a HTML document and import it in as a web object. Then add an invisible button on top and see if it blocks the animation again. You can probably test this out using any website with a button and placing a big invisible button over it.
