Using groups

Jul 03, 2013

Sorry I am new to StoryLine, but I was under the assumption that I could group objects together and treat them as one object. I am finding it harder than I thought.

Here is what I am trying to do, when I click a button I want my "group 1" to appear, and when I click the close button I want my "group 1" to disappear.  How do I do that?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Boyd,

To accomplish what you are trying to do, you will need to use states (normal and hidden) which you are unable to apply to a group of objects (I have no explanation as to why you can't but have often wondered myself ).

However, you can still select each individual object within the group and set the initial state to hidden and then add a trigger to change the state of these objects to normal when the user clicks a button. You will then need to add additional triggers that reverse the logic when the user clicks on close i.e. "change state of object 1 to hidden when user clicks close button".

Alternatively, if the slide design permits it, you could add a shape over the group to act as a mask, re-colour it so it blends in with the slide background and then toggle the state of this one object when the user clicks?

Hi All,

Plus, Boyd, if you'd like to have only one button for the show/hide, you can do that as well using a trick I must have learned from Phil somewhere along the line. I've done it in the attached story. Here's what I did.

The button says Show

I added the selected state to the button and changed the text on the selected state to Hide
Then I added 2 triggers to the button:
Change state of Rectangle 1 to Grouped when the user clicks the Button if the Button's state is equal to selected
Change state of Rectangle 1 to Hidden when the user clicks the Button if the Button is not equal to selected
