Using Tab Key in text boxes

Apr 22, 2014

Hello,

I would like your help in using the Tab Key from the Keyboard.

Here you will find my slide, where there are 5 text boxes to fill in.

When I write the answer in one of the text box, I would like to get to the following text box using the Tab Key, and so I don't have to click in each box but just only use the tab key.

And I don't know how to do it !

Is there someone you could help me, please ?

Thanks a lot,

Amanda

Hi Amanda and welcome to Heroes!

I was able to use the tab key to get to each text box and enter in text, but you'll also see the Yellow box appear around all the other slide elements as the tab key functions as an accessibility feature for screen readers as described here. If you'd like to not have those elements accessible, you'll need to turn off that functionality in the size and position window, but the tab key will still function in the order described within that article.

Hello Ashley,

Is there a method to disable the screen reader functionality for the Player? I am simulating software behavior where the user presses the Tab key to skip over several unused fields, enters a zip code, and then press TAB again to automatically populate the city and state. The functionality works as designed when I test in Storyline and when I test a version published for the Web. But when I test the version published for our LMS (AICC) the Tab key jumps and highlights the PREV button in the Player. (I have the seekbar on with audio).

I did see another post that recommended using a key other than TAB and telling the learners that they would use TAB in the real system. But this doesn't appeal to me as a viable option.

I was hoping I could disable the screen reader function on the slides using the Size and Position Alt Text controls and then also disable the screen reader for highlight elements of the Player.

My backup option is to automate this navigation and just explain what the user would do in the real system.

Do you have any suggestions or ideas on how I could preserve using the TAB key?

Hi Paul,

You can't disable the tab all together as it's a built in accessibility feature and by design is not supposed to be disabled. Storyline 2 does have the option to set up your own custom tab order as detailed here - so that may help ensure that it works as you need, but I'd probably steer clear of the tab as a trigger to go to another part of the slide or set some information - just because of the accessibility interference.

Hello Ashley,

Thanks for the quick reply. After considering my options, I decided to take your advice and not use the Tab key as a trigger. I instead just showed a demonstration of how the field works.

Thanks,

- Paul
